Himachal Pradesh Tourism

Tourism in Himachal Pradesh relates to tourism in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. This is famous for its Himalayan landscapes and popular hill-stations. Many outdoor activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, paragliding, ice-skating, trekking, rafting,and heli-skiing are popular tourist attractions in Himachal Pradesh. Until the British reign, tourism in Himachal Pradesh was very limited to a few places around the hills and some spiritual destinations. The British developed hill stations during their reign one of them being Shimla which they called The Summer Capital of India. After the British rule, tourism in Himachal Pradesh was on the rise with the highest number of tourists in the mid 1980s and 1990s.
Shimla, the state capital, is popular among tourists. The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a mountain railway which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shimla is also a famous skiing attraction in India. Other popular hill stations include Manali, Kinnuar, Kasol, Parvati Valley, Chamba, Kullu, Kinnar Kailesh, and Kasauli. Dharamshala, home of the Dalai Lama, is known for its Tibetan monasteries and Buddhist temples. Many trekking expeditions also begin here.

Chamba
This enchanting town positions itself at the elevation of 996 m above sea level. The famous Chamba valley is noted for the splendour of its scenery that touches the edge of the Shivaliks. The town and nearby areas have immense chances to enjoy leisure activities. This land of mystic beauty, lofty mountain passes, refreshing air and breathtaking vistas make it a spectacle to inspire creative minds. Built in the Shikhara style, Laxmi Narayana Temple is another must-see attraction.

Kangra
It is a wonderful place to visit. Originally founded by Rajput Kshatriyas, the town is close to McLeodGanj. Kangra Fort is the most famous tourist spot here. It boasts of being the largest fort in the whole of Himachal Pradesh. The beautiful tea gardens beckon tourists to go on a refreshing journey.

Dharamshala
Literally, the term Dharamshala means 'The Holy Refuge'. Being a home to present Dalai Lama, this scenic hill station is very popular. It lies at an elevation of 4,550 ft above sea level. Enveloped by the majestic Dhauladhar mountains, the town has unmatched distinction of being the chosen home of the spiritual head of the Tibetan people.

Manali
The destination is perfect for those who want to blossom their love buds in a serene ambience. With its towering peaks and verdant terrain, Manali invites adventure lovers from across the globe. Set amidst the deciduous forests, the wooden Hidimba Devi Temple adds to the town. Tourists can enjoy a medicinal soak in the hot springs gushing from the ground a 30 minute walk from the town.

Shimla
The capital city of Himachal Pradesh is among the most picturesque hill stations in India. Due to its natural splendour, the city is known as the “Queen of the Hill Stations”. Lies in the north-west of Himalayas, Shimla once served as the summer capital of India. This hill town abounds in hills, forests and hotels. Kufri lies nearby is the popular attraction here. Jakhu Hill, Shimla State Museum and Observatory Hill are the major highlights of the town.

Dalhousie
This amazing hill resort is located about 92 km away from Dharamshala. It is perfect for those who are looking for tranquil surroundings and a healthy ambience. Besides natural beauty, Dalhousie also houses major attractions including Churches, Khajjiar, Satdhara, Subhash Baoli, Marquis of Dalhousie and Panchpula.

Kullu Valley
Located on the banks of the Beas, Kullu valley is 80 km long and 2 km at its broadest. Renowned as the “Valley of Gods”, Kullu is the most delightful are in the western Himalayas. In the spring, Kullu becomes colourful with pink blossoms and white flowers. It is the starting points for a number of exciting treks.
